Environmental Internship Opportunity at Local Urban Forestry Nonprofit



Our City Forest has been the leading urban forestry non-profit in the San José area since 1994. Our mission is to cultivate a green and healthy Silicon Valley by engaging community members in the appreciation, protection, growth and maintenance of our urban ecosystem, especially our urban forest.


Our City Forest environmental interns will gain experience in the nonprofit sector. Interns will gain valuable training in urban forestry skills and community outreach. University credits may be available, check with university for more details and requirements.

Positions can be 3-12 months and can vary between 12-40 hours a week (or 2-5 days), depending on the availability of the applicant. Start dates vary depending on the program need and availability of interns.

Responsibilities and tasks will vary depending on the applicant’s interests, availability, experience, and the program’s needs. Tasks may include:

  • Databasing stewardship information, tracking, and other nonprofit admin support

  • Watering trees and shrubs, and helping with other tree care activities in the community

  • Community outreach and planting event organizing

  • Water and care for plants at the Community Nursery and help residents during open hours.


  • Must be enrolled in a university or in a gap year; minimum age: 18

  • Interest in affecting change through community organizing

  • Ability to work well with diverse groups of people

  • Strong written & oral communication skills

  • Local, Bay Area applicants only

This position is unpaid and housing is not available.

Tree Care - help with watering young trees around San José with a small team

GIS - help with databasing records & mapping planting locations (must have GIS experience)

Nursery - help with watering young plants, customer service, construction projects and other best management practices

Lawn Busters - help with maintenance routes and lawn conversion projects 

Outreach - help get plantings organized in neighborhoods; spread the word about Our City Forest’s services at events and through flyering

Martial Cottle Park - help with maintenance of Our City Forest’s site, including watering, weeding, and welcoming visitors

Office Administration - help with filing paperwork, phones and emails, databasing, and staff support
